Taekwon-Do is a way of life. Physically it is a martial art a system of unarmed combat for the purpose of self defense. Mentally it is a means of strengthening the mind as well as the body. It is also a set of principles for living an ethical, harmonious life and has many benefits.
Taekwon-Do is the Korean art of self-defense founded by the charismatic General Choi Chong Hi in 1955. It is literally translated as the way of the foot and the fist, but it is also both an art and a philosophy with a strong moral code dating back to the Hwa Rang Do warriors over 2000 years ago.
Grandmaster General Choi founded the International Taekwon-Do Federation in 1966 and was its President until his death in 2002. General Choi described himself as a weak and frequently sick child. He took up martial arts to become stronger and studied with several different schools. He led a student rebellion in Korea against the ruling Japanese and was imprisoned for several years. He made use of his time by studying further into the martial arts and teaching other prisoners, then his guards. After his release, he was made a leader in the new Korean army and taught his form of martial art to his troops.
Over the years, he fused the most effective martial arts techniques into a comprehensive, scientifically-based system, which he named Taekwon-Do. It was officially recognised as the Korean national martial art in 1955. GeneralChoi has toured the world tirelessly, conducting seminars, refining techniques and building a formidable network of Master Instructors and Taekwon-Do schools in every part of the globe.
Modern Taekwon-Do stands out from other martial arts in its aim for technical perfection and inner discipline. “It is a never-ending learning process you are learning about yourself as much as you are learning about the art. Becoming the best you can be physically, mentally and spiritually. I think the Master becomes the art, it gets infused into every aspect of life and teaching. A good teacher naturally passes on this way of life to his or her students” Says Grandmaster Linda Low.
